Part 2

That night in 2009, Dad had kept the promise Mom asked him to make. When her condition became critical, she told him she wanted his final memories of her to be the woman she had been before the hospital. She did not want him to remember machines, pain, or the frightening sounds of a final night. Dad reluctantly left her room, carrying her words with him. Instead of going home, he rode to the overlook where he had proposed to her in 1970. He sat there until sunset, talking to her as though she were beside him. He remembered their first years together, their family, their arguments, their laughter, and all the ordinary moments that had made their marriage theirs.

For seventeen years, I had carried a completely different version of that night. I thought Dad had abandoned Mom when she needed him most. I had never asked enough questions, and he had never corrected me. But now he explained why he had stayed silent. He believed he was protecting the promise she had made him swear to keep. Even when people assumed he had been cowardly, he said nothing because defending himself would have meant explaining something Mom had wanted kept private. He had chosen to carry the misunderstanding rather than break her confidence.

Then Dad explained why he had made the sixty-mile journey now. His dementia had been getting worse, and one morning he had forgotten Mom’s name for several frightening seconds. That moment terrified him. He realized there might soon come a day when he could no longer explain why she mattered or remember the promise she had given him. So he replaced the battery in his Harley, planned the route, carried two helmets, and rode back to the hospital where everything had changed seventeen years earlier. He wasn’t there to bring Mom home. He was there to find me and make sure her story survived him.
