The aftermath was louder than anything I had expected, even though I remained almost completely silent. Gregory called forty times before breakfast. Then he added me back to the family group chat from his own phone, apparently believing the entire problem had been that my name was missing from a screen. I muted the conversation and left again. His mother called me ungrateful. She spoke for several minutes without stopping, listing everything the family had supposedly done for me, and I simply listened until she finished. I had spent years trying to explain myself to people who had already decided what my silence meant. I was not going to do it anymore.

When the lawyer’s letter arrived, Gregory finally understood that I had not left to frighten him or make a point. I had planned it. The lease was real. The savings were real. The conversations with the lawyer were real. And the future I had been quietly preparing was already moving without his permission. He looked stunned when we sat across from each other to discuss custody, almost as if the woman who had kept the household running could not possibly have been capable of making plans without him. We eventually settled on shared custody. Daisy would have her father’s house and her mother’s house, and I tried to make that difference feel safe rather than frightening.

Our first night in the new apartment was strangely peaceful. There were still boxes everywhere, and the kitchen was too small, but I put a platter of chicken drumsticks on the table. Daisy ate one, then another, then a third. She looked at me carefully and asked, “Can I?” I almost laughed because I knew exactly what she meant. She was asking for permission to simply be comfortable. I looked around the little apartment and realized something I had forgotten how to feel: no one was waiting for me to earn my place there. I smiled and said, “Always.” But months later, a message arrived that made me realize the story was not finished.
