The Promise Kept — Part 2

Callum had died six weeks before Wendell arrived. A heart attack. He was only forty-seven. I stood there staring at the man who had come to deliver news from someone I had not seen in twenty-six years, trying to understand how a stranger from a sidewalk had carried my name through an entire lifetime. Wendell told me Callum had spoken about me often, but never as though I had rescued him. He said Callum remembered something much simpler. I had sat down. I had not handed him money and hurried away. I had stayed beside him when everyone else had walked past.

Wendell gave me a small box. Inside was the red sailboat patch, carefully wrapped in tissue paper. Beneath it was a letter written in Callum’s handwriting only a week before his death. He thanked me for stopping that afternoon and explained that my kindness had been the first moment in years when he felt human instead of invisible. He apologized for taking so long to keep his promise. Beneath the letter was a cashier’s check. Wendell explained that it represented Callum’s gratitude and that Callum had specifically instructed him to make sure it reached me.

I asked about Callum’s family. Wendell told me he had a wife and two daughters, and that they all knew about me. Callum had told his daughters the story many times. He had told them about the woman who gave a broken stranger ten dollars, shared her son’s name, and sat beside him without asking anything in return. I cried when Wendell told me that, because I suddenly understood that Callum had not remembered the money most of all. He remembered that someone had believed he was worth twenty minutes of her time.
