Caleb came closer, but Rhonda stepped between us, talking about presents and the family she believed I had insulted. I waited. Then I told Caleb about Walter’s recipe card. Walter wrote it when he taught me to cook, after I rushed everything, even grief. He laughed and said slow was a kind of love. I told Caleb his father had worked Saturdays for a year to afford his eighth dinner. He stood behind a boy in a tie and called him “Our boy.”

He said he was sorry. I told him sorry would not erase seven years, but it could become the first honest thing he had done. He nodded. I slid his card across the table. He opened it slowly, the way Walter taught us.
