A shiny band or metal cylinder locked around a mature trunk looks like leftover hardware or a brace for a split tree. It is neither. Arborists and groundskeepers call it a tree baffle. The job is simple. Squirrels, raccoons, and opossums climb bark with claws that grip almost any surface. Once they reach the canopy, a branch that hangs near a roof becomes a path into an attic, a chimney, or a bird feeder. The metal collar is meant to cut that path at the trunk.<\/p>\n

The surface is the whole trick. Bark gives claws something to hold. Smooth galvanized steel or aluminum does not. An animal that tries to pass the band loses traction and slides back down. Wider flat bands suit thick, older trunks. Cone-shaped baffles, sloping downward, are used on younger trees where a climber might scramble up at an angle. Some are painted so they do not stand out against the bark. The point is the same in every style: no grip, no climb, no free ride onto the house.<\/p>\n
