My father had never believed women were weak. He had believed I was the one person he might still save from the kind of loss he had witnessed in 1991. Instead of telling me he was afraid, he used the only language his damaged pride seemed to understand. He called me a zero in front of officers. He mocked my work. He treated my ambitions like childish rebellion. I had spent years thinking he wanted to make me smaller, when the truth was that he was terrified of watching another woman disappear because of a decision he had encouraged.<\/p>\n
I did not confront him immediately. I kept thinking about the bunker, the target, the command in my earpiece, and the strange shame I felt after returning safely. I had proved myself, but suddenly that victory felt different. I went to his quarters and placed the 1991 file on his table, opened to the woman\u2019s name. I told him I knew. Then I said the only thing I wanted him to understand: I had come home anyway. He placed his hand over her name, as though he were keeping the page from blowing away.<\/p>\n
He never apologized. Instead, he told me that on the night she died, he had read every after-action report from Sierra Tango, searching for my name among the casualties.
