It began with an apology. Mama explained that the money hidden in the flour tin was only part of what she had recovered. After Curtis stole thousands from my settlement, she quietly saved every spare bill she could, fearing discovery. She also left the original bank account untouched, allowing interest to grow. Together, they restored what had been taken. Her final lines were about my brother, Wendell, and the secret he had carried since he was nineteen.

Wendell had known Curtis stole the settlement. Mama told him because she needed someone to protect the flour tin. Curtis later offered Wendell a truck for silence. Wendell accepted, and for years he watched me believe our family had simply been unlucky. When I confronted him, he admitted everything. Shame had delayed his confession. I realized the money could be counted, but the years of deception could not.

I chose not to sue him. Curtis was already dead, and the recovered money had returned to me. I told Wendell that forgiveness would require honesty, not excuses. He apologized without asking me to forget, and I walked away. The bank transferred the recovered funds to me, exactly as Mama intended. I finally understood why she protected the tin.
