I had not called the sheriff. I want that clear, because the story sounds like it should end with deputies and handcuffs, but I had arranged none of it. What waited in the driveway was much quieter. A locksmith had come the morning before. Every one of their belongings\u2014suitcases, champagne flutes, boxes from the SUV\u2014had been professionally packed by a moving company I hired and placed sealed and labeled beneath a tarp on the lawn.
