George Santos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>President Donald Trump<\/strong> on Friday announced he is <strong>commuting the sentence of former New York GOP Rep. George Santos<\/strong>, who had been serving more than seven years in federal prison for <strong>wire fraud and identity theft<\/strong>. Santos, 36, pleaded guilty last summer and began his sentence in July at a New Jersey correctional facility. In a statement on <strong>Truth Social<\/strong>, Trump called Santos \u201csomewhat of a \u2018rogue\u2019\u201d but said his treatment had been excessive. \u201cGeorge has been in solitary confinement for long stretches of time and, by all accounts, has been horribly mistreated,\u201d Trump wrote. \u201cTherefore, I just signed a commutation, releasing George Santos from prison immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The decision converts the remainder of Santos\u2019 sentence to <strong>time served<\/strong>, freeing him at once. Santos had appealed directly to the president, calling his punishment \u201cpolitically influenced\u201d and claiming prosecutors had targeted him for partisan reasons. <strong>Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.)<\/strong>, one of Trump\u2019s strongest allies, praised the move, calling Santos\u2019 confinement \u201ctorture\u201d and thanking the president for intervening. Before entering prison, Santos reflected on his dramatic fall from grace, posting, \u201cFrom the halls of Congress to the chaos of cable news, what a ride it\u2019s been! Was it messy? Always. Glamorous? Occasionally. Honest? I tried\u2026 most days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Santos was <strong>expelled from Congress in 2023<\/strong> after being accused of defrauding donors and violating campaign finance laws. The <strong>Campaign Legal Center<\/strong>, which first filed an FEC complaint against him, hailed his conviction as a \u201cmajor victory for voters.\u201d His commutation comes amid renewed focus on <strong>Trump\u2019s clemency record<\/strong>. On <strong>Inauguration Day<\/strong>, Trump granted clemency to about <strong>1,550 January 6 defendants<\/strong>, many convicted of nonviolent offenses, calling it an effort to restore \u201cfairness.\u201d Supporters contrasted this with <strong>former President Joe Biden\u2019s<\/strong> mass pardons\u2014over <strong>8,000 individuals<\/strong>, including family members and political allies\u2014arguing Biden used clemency to \u201ccover for corruption,\u201d while Trump used it to \u201ccorrect injustice.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Donald Trump on Friday announced he is commuting the sentence of former New York GOP Rep.
