My name is Rick Dalton. I\u2019m fifty-two, and I supervise a small HVAC crew in Fort Wayne, Indiana. My father, Jack, is seventy-four and spent fifty years at the GM plant in Anderson. He is the kind of man who shows love by showing up. My wife Karen\u2019s wealthy parents, Don and Margaret Whitfield, have always treated him with polite contempt because he works with his hands. For twelve years, I stayed quiet because I thought keeping peace between both families was my job. I finally learned how wrong I was on Thanksgiving morning. Dad called and said Karen had told him not to come because dinner would be small and she didn\u2019t want him feeling crowded. She called me childish and warned that her parents would be embarrassed. I packed the turkey, sweet potatoes, green beans, rolls, and pie into foil trays and drove to Dad\u2019s house. He opened the door, looked at the food, and simply asked, \u201cYou planning on standing out there all day?\u201d We ate Thanksgiving together at the kitchen table he had built in 1987. Later, he quietly said, \u201cYou didn\u2019t have to do this.\u201d I looked at him and knew I finally had to tell him the truth: he should have been there all along.
