Buying the note had been real, and I didn’t regret that decision. It meant I had taken control instead of leaving the matter in the hands of a foreclosure department. But the eviction summons, the thirty-day deadline, and the threat of having a sheriff remove Corinne and her family had been something else entirely. Those were plans born from anger. I had imagined myself walking away while they finally experienced the fear and humiliation I had carried for years. But now Piper’s question had made me realize who would actually suffer. Three children would lose their bedrooms because I wanted their mother to hurt. I couldn’t do it.<\/p>\n

Within a month, I changed the arrangement. I put the mortgage into a formal repayment plan that Corinne and Garrett could realistically afford. Everything was written down. They would keep the house, make regular payments, and understand that I would no longer be their source of endless financial rescue. I wasn’t giving them the house, and I wasn’t punishing them either. I was creating a boundary. For the first time, Corinne would have to meet her responsibilities without being rescued, but her children wouldn’t have to pay the price for the adults’ mistakes. It wasn’t the dramatic ending I had imagined, but it was one I could live with.<\/p>\n
I never took back the words I had spoken in that kitchen. Corinne had earned them, and I wasn’t going to pretend the confrontation had never happened. I also never apologized simply because choosing mercy made me uncomfortable. There is a difference between refusing to punish innocent children and pretending someone never hurt you. I could hold Corinne accountable without destroying her children’s lives. My mother, however, made her own decision. After everything happened, she stopped speaking to me completely. At first, that silence hurt. Eventually, I realized I didn’t have to spend the rest of my life grieving someone who had chosen not to be part of it.<\/p>\n

Aunt Maren still had the bank statements that had started everything. I asked her not to send them to me. I didn’t need another weapon. I had already learned what anger could make me want to do, and I didn’t want to keep feeding it. I had wanted revenge because I wanted my family to understand what they had done to me. Instead, my daughter helped me understand something more important: I didn’t need to become cruel just because other people had been cruel to me.<\/p>\n
