The folder on my kitchen table stayed there. I had imagined confronting Delphine with the deed, payment records, and my late husband\u2019s statements, but none of it was necessary. When the property assessor arrived, he asked one simple question: who had authorized the assessment? Delphine pointed toward me and claimed I was \u201cgetting things in order.\u201d I handed him my identification and the deed.
