We met at a place near the ferry terminal. Camille arrived with her son in a stroller and looked exhausted rather than triumphant. She had not known I existed until October. Julian told her he was separated, that the paperwork was in progress, that he was staying in the guest room to keep things civil. He showed her a photograph of our house and called it the property being divided. The jewelry was a birthday gift. The hotel was the night she found out her ex was seeking full custody, and Julian drove two hours to sit with her. She thought she was being rescued by a free man.<\/p>\n
