The carved oak beams, the long arched windows, the stone fireplace behind the head table. \u201cThree years ago this hotel was a condemned shell,\u201d he said. \u201cI drew the restoration. But the man who led the crew that rebuilt it, beam by beam, is the man you just called uneducated. You are sitting in a room my brother built with his hands.\u201d Lawrence looked up at those beams as if seeing them for the first time. Then Toby said the part nobody expected. Lawrence\u2019s firm had just signed a contract for its new headquarters, designed by Toby, with Hollis\u2019s company already chosen to build it. He set it down between himself and Imogen, in the seat that had been reserved for the father of the bride.
