The note Harper read was in Trevor\u2019s handwriting, stuck to the fridge, a reminder to himself. It said, in his own words, the dates of the beach trip and, beneath them, Eli stays, tell A and M he\u2019s at a friend\u2019s. His own daughter read it out loud. He had lied to his children too, told them Eli was staying with a friend so they would not ask questions at the beach, and Harper, ten years old, understood in one sentence exactly what her father had done to her stepbrother, and she started to cry, and she would not stop.<\/p>\n
The marriage ended that night. There was no version of it that survived a summons and a refunded plane ticket. Trevor faced the endangerment charge, and I did not soften a single detail of it, because a man who teaches a child to say sorry for being left alone does not get my mercy.<\/p>\n
Eli is eleven now. He goes fishing. I take him. Harper still calls me, and she and Eli remained close, because none of it was hers, and she chose him over the story her father tried to tell.<\/p>\n
