The officer knelt down to Micah\u2019s height, and what turned his face serious was not my son\u2019s tantrum. It was that Micah had known exactly how to dial 911, had spoken clearly to the dispatcher, had given our full address without hesitating, and had stayed on the line until help came. The officer looked up at me and said, gently, that he was not there to lecture anybody. He was there because a child who can do all of that calmly, over ice cream, is a child who will do it flawlessly on the day it actually matters, and most kids that age freeze or forget the address or hang up in fear. He told Micah he had done the calling part perfectly, and then he explained, kindly, the difference between an emergency and a disappointment, and asked Micah to promise he would save that skill for a real one.<\/p>\n

He asked whether he could show Micah the squad car, and he spent fifteen minutes walking my son through what a genuine emergency looks like, the kinds of things that are worth a 911 call, the way to help a grown-up who has collapsed, how to unlock a phone and find the emergency dialer.
