I did not react. Then I opened the folder he set beside my notary stamp. Inside were the documents Brooke had described, word for word. A debt transfer assigning the company\u2019s equipment loans and unpaid taxes to me. A quitclaim on the house. And, clipped to the back, a signature page where my name had already been forged in his hand, waiting only for a stamp from a notary who did not know either of us.
