I mailed her copies. Not out of cruelty. Because she had stood in that kitchen genuinely believing I had contributed nothing to my own rescue of her, and I decided she deserved to know the actual arithmetic of her fragility. Eleven years of it. The tuition our parents \u201cfound\u201d was a home equity line I had co-signed at twenty-two and quietly paid down at seventy dollars a month for a decade. The wedding they \u201crefinanced the house\u201d for had a second lien my name was also on. The eight months of healing after her divorce had run through my checking account in groceries and utilities and a car repair she never learned wasn\u2019t hers to owe. Our parents had shielded her from all of it by feeding me the balance in prescriptions and dish-towel guilt.<\/p>\n
Delphine did not speak to our parents for four months after she read it. That was her choice, not mine. She called me in the spring, and for the first time in our lives she asked a question that was not a request. She asked how much of her life I had actually paid for. I told her the truth, and then I told her I did not want it back, and both of those things were true.<\/p>\n
I did help. Reasonably. I cleared the two liens with my name on them, because they were mine as much as anyone\u2019s, and then I closed the account that had bled into the family for a decade. I paid off my own loans. I set the rest where a weak moment could not reach it.<\/p>\n
My parents wrote to me about family and forgiveness. I answered once, plainly, and then stopped.<\/p>\n
Delphine and I are something now that we never were before, two adults instead of a rescue and a resource. She got a job. She pays her own real bills, which turn out to be the same kind I had been paying all along.<\/p>\n
