What my father told me on that call was the thing they had been hiding for four years. The house was already two payments behind before I ever stopped. My money had not been covering the mortgage.<\/p>\n

It had been covering the fact that they had stopped making the full payment themselves long ago and were using my contribution to hide a shortfall from a second loan they took out against the house in 2021, one I never knew existed. When I removed my account, the whole structure showed itself, because there had never been enough underneath it. I had not been helping them stay afloat. I had been the reason they could pretend they were not already sinking.<\/p>\n
