I understood then why she had not cried at the funeral. She had not been unmoved. She had been carrying it somewhere the rest of us could not see, the same way she carried everything, quietly, until she found a way to make it permanent so it could never be taken.<\/p>\n
Warren put his hand over his mouth and left the room. When he came back his eyes were red and he did not say a word about September or the police. He sat down next to her and asked, very gently, if he could see it again. She let him hold her wrist under the lamp for a long time.<\/p>\n
I apologised for the worst sentence I have ever said to my child. She told me it was okay, that she knew I was drowning. A fifteen-year-old, forgiving me for that, in that week. I will spend a long time earning it.<\/p>\n
The funeral bill got paid. Warren picked up weekend shifts and I sold my mother\u2019s car, and we handled it the way she would have, quietly, without a fuss.<\/p>\n
Nadia is nineteen now. The words have faded a little, the way handwriting does. She says she likes that. It means it is aging with her.<\/p>\n
We kept the porch light on. We keep it on still, every night, on purpose.<\/p>\n
