A quitclaim deed, unsigned, dated the previous week, that Grayson had already had drawn up transferring a half-interest in my house into a holding company registered in his name alone. He had not told her. Her name was nowhere on it. He had been planning to strip the asset out from under both of us, and my daughter\u2019s function in the marriage, I am fairly sure, had been to get him through my front door.<\/p>\n
She sat down on the floor of my kitchen when she understood. I made her tea and I did not say I told you so, because there is no satisfaction in that when it is your own child on the tiles.<\/p>\n
They left by seven. Grayson took his suitcases and his holding company and went, and the annulment was quick because concealed insolvency is its own kind of fraud in a marriage.<\/p>\n
Nadia moved into the beach house for three months. Not as a guest issuing instructions. As my daughter, who cooked half the meals and cried at the sink twice and slowly became someone I recognised again. She is thirty-one and she is careful now, in a way I respect.<\/p>\n
She lives in Portland. She calls on Sundays. She has never once told me to have anything ready by six.<\/p>\n
I still have the beach house. I still pour my own coffee at whatever hour I like.<\/p>\n
