There were no renovations. There never had been. Elliot had lost his job in the winter and the house was in foreclosure, and my son had been too ashamed to tell his own mother, so he invented a summer of dust and tools to give his children somewhere safe while everything fell apart four hours from my door. Caleb knew. Of course he knew. Children always know more than we let ourselves believe. He had recorded, on that hidden phone, the arguments through the bedroom wall, the calls from the bank, his parents crying at the kitchen table when they thought both kids were asleep. He kept it in the green backpack all summer because he was afraid to lose it and afraid for anyone to find it, and in the end he left it under my mattress because he could not carry the weight of it home one more time.<\/p>\n
The rest of the note asked me not to be angry at his dad. A ten-year-old, protecting his father, from his grandmother, in pencil.<\/p>\n
I drove the five hours the next morning. I did not call first. Elliot opened the door and saw my face and knew, and my grown son put his head on my shoulder in the doorway like he was ten himself. We sat at that same kitchen table and I did not lecture him. I asked what he needed, and then I gave it, and I have never once mentioned the phone to him because it was Caleb\u2019s to give, not mine.<\/p>\n
They kept the house. Elliot works again, closer now. Caleb has a proper phone these days and does not guard it, which tells me everything.<\/p>\n
I have all four of them at Christmas. The green backpack hangs on a hook in my guest room. Caleb asked me to keep it there.<\/p>\n
I spent a summer thinking a little boy was hiding a toy. He was carrying his whole family\u2019s fear so the adults would not have to. Nobody should be that young and that alone with something that heavy.
