It was a phone. An old one, cracked, cheap, the kind you buy with cash and no contract, and it was heavy in my hand only because of what it meant. The note underneath it, in my ten-year-old grandson\u2019s careful handwriting, began: Grandma, if you found this it means I was too scared to tell you out loud.<\/p>\n

I read that line and I had to put the phone down on the bare mattress and hold the edge of the bed.<\/p>\n
