There were cribs everywhere. They stood across the porch, along the walkway, beside the flower beds, and all the way out to the pavement. Some were wooden, some metal, some old enough to have scratches and chipped paint. Others looked almost new. I opened my front door and simply stared. Nobody was standing there. No car was parked nearby. There were no footsteps in the wet grass and no note explaining who had brought them. In the first crib sat a small cardboard box marked with a number one. My hands trembled when I opened it. Inside were Marguerite\u2019s baby clothes, folded exactly the way I remembered folding them myself. Beneath them was the hospital bracelet from the day she was born. Under that was a photograph I had lost eleven years earlier. It showed Marguerite at twenty-three, laughing beside a group of women whose names I did not recognize. I sat on the porch and held the photograph against my chest until I could breathe again.<\/p>\n
The young woman from the caf\u00e9 was named Odile. I learned that later that morning when someone from the clinic called me. Things they had saved because Marguerite had once helped them believe their babies deserved a safe place to sleep. They brought everything overnight because they wanted me to see that my daughter had not simply gone to work every morning. I kept four cribs. The rest went to families who needed them. Odile eventually had a daughter, and she named her Marguerite. She is nine now. For years, she slept in the crib marked number one. Eventually, she outgrew it and began climbing on the rails instead, turning the same little bed into an obstacle course.<\/p>\n
Sometimes I still walk into my daughter\u2019s room and expect to hear her voice.<\/p>\n
