Forty calls went unanswered while the ambulance carried Winifred through Sacramento. Her son, Damon, finally answered only to tell me to stop calling. He was closing the most important project of his career, he said. Behind his voice, I heard surf and a young woman laughing.<\/p>\n

At the hospital, they allowed me into intensive care for a few minutes. I knelt beside Winifred and held her hand, telling her I had tried everything to reach her son. Her fingers suddenly moved. Something cold slipped into my palm. She looked directly at me, but her lips barely moved. She formed one word without making a sound.<\/p>\n

Then the monitor held its terrible, steady note.<\/p>\n

I arranged everything alone over the next three days. At the wake, Damon\u2019s relatives blamed me for his absence. His aunt asked how I could have allowed his only son to stay away. His uncle said a good wife would have found a way.<\/p>\n

I had found the way.<\/p>\n

It was waiting inside Damon\u2019s truck.<\/p>\n
