The smell reached me before my eyes adjusted to the dim light. The house was cold, the curtains drawn, and every surface was buried beneath clutter. But none of that was what stopped me in the doorway. Oliver had marked the days when he gave his grandmother her medication because, as far as he knew, no adult was doing it. At just seven years old, he had been trying to care for the person who was supposed to be caring for him.<\/p>\n
His grandmother had been declining for months, missing medication, forgetting to eat, and slipping in and out of confusion. Oliver\u2019s father worked out of town and believed everything was fine.
