Harold picked up the second page with trembling hands. His eyes moved slowly across the document.<\/p>\n
It was a notice of complete debt forgiveness.<\/p>\n
Every dollar he owed was being canceled. Preston\u2019s gym loan was forgiven. Dixon\u2019s remaining restaurant debt was gone. The mortgage that had kept Harold awake at night was no longer hanging over him.<\/p>\n
He read the notice twice.<\/p>\n
Then he looked at Corinne.<\/p>\n
\u201cI could have foreclosed,\u201d she said calmly. \u201cOn the house. On the gym. On everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harold stared at it.<\/p>\n
\u201cI bought it with the money I earned from the thing you told me was useless. The education you wanted me to abandon.\u201d<\/p>\n
For the first time in Corinne\u2019s life, her father had nothing to say.<\/p>\n
Her mother covered her mouth with a trembling hand. Preston opened his mouth, then closed it. Dixon quietly sat back down. The relatives who had laughed at Corinne earlier suddenly found their plates very interesting.<\/p>\n
Corinne buttoned her jacket.<\/p>\n
