They arrived at the gate within the hour, all of them. Vanessa was still wearing her getting-ready robe, Derek was red-faced with anger, and his polished parents stood beside a luxury car that probably cost more than my first truck. Ben, my farm manager, met them at the closed gate. Exactly as I had instructed, he didn’t open it.<\/p>\n
I walked down the gravel path in my worn work boots and denim shirt. Soil still clung beneath my fingernails. I stopped on my side of the iron bars and looked at the people who wanted everything I had built but apparently wanted nothing to do with me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can when it’s my property.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then I looked at Vanessa.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd there’s something else.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her expression changed.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe stone house by the creek\u2014the house I promised you\u2014is no longer yours.\u201d<\/p>\n
She stared at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never transferred the deed. I only promised it to you.\u201d<\/p>\n
Derek’s mother gasped.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can,\u201d I replied. \u201cA gift isn’t complete because someone becomes comfortable believing they already own it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Derek spun toward Vanessa.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought it was!\u201d<\/p>\n
He looked back at me, and I watched something change in his face. For the first time, he understood that the vineyard, the house, the land, and the lifestyle he had been preparing to marry into all belonged to the woman standing behind the gate.<\/p>\n
The wedding collapsed that Saturday.<\/p>\n
