At dawn Mara stood on the cliff above the harbor, watching the sea turn silver beneath a pale orange sky. Fishing boats rested near the shore, their ropes loose and quiet. Then she noticed something odd beyond the breakwater: long lines of waves crossed one another, forming perfect squares across the surface. Mara had seen photographs of square waves, but never one this large. She raised her camera and stepped closer to the cliff edge.<\/p>\n

Below, the pattern grew wider and darker as two swells approached from different directions. Mara watched a small fishing boat enter the crossing waves.
