For the first time since I had known him, he looked embarrassed instead of defensive. The confidence he usually relied on had vanished, replaced by the uncomfortable realization that the facts were impossible to argue with.<\/p>\n

Not a romantic one\u2014a financial one. He had prepared a detailed household budget, automatic transfers, and a plan to contribute fairly to expenses.
