I sat up slowly, pressing the phone tighter to my ear, feeling my pulse climb as if my body had already decided something was wrong before I did. \u201cMa\u2019am,\u201d the officer continued, \u201cwe\u2019re calling regarding an incident reported at your parents\u2019 residence last night.\u201d My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n

I swung my legs off the bed. \u201cWhat kind of incident?\u201d I asked. There was a pause on the line\u2014careful, practiced. \u201cThere was a domestic disturbance,\u201d he said. \u201cYour name was provided as the primary contact.\u201d That made no sense. I hadn\u2019t been there when I left. I had walked out, I had closed the door, I had told myself I was done. Yet somehow my name was already tied to whatever chaos had unfolded after I left.<\/p>\n

I was at my parents\u2019 house within twenty minutes. The porch light was still on, even though the sun was up, washing everything in a pale, uncomfortable brightness. A patrol car sat near the curb. My mother stood in the doorway, arms folded tightly, face rigid in a way I knew too well\u2014it wasn\u2019t fear. It was control trying to reassert itself. Behind him, my mother snapped. \u201cDon\u2019t make this difficult, Martha.\u201d My father stepped forward. \u201cYou embarrassed your sister last night,\u201d he said. \u201cNow you\u2019re creating problems over nothing.\u201d That sentence\u2014over nothing\u2014hit harder than anything else. Because to them, I was always nothing until I refused to be used. The officer looked between us, slowly realizing he hadn\u2019t been called for danger. He had been called for obedience.<\/p>\n

I stood there, something steadying inside me for the first time in years. \u201cI\u2019m not available,\u201d I said simply. Not angry. Not pleading. Final.
